Experience the Art of Japanese Swordsmithing at Hirata Tantoujou

Since the Meiji period, when carrying swords in public was banned, katanas (Japanese swords) were mostly kept at home. But when visiting the Hirata Tantoujou forge, it becomes clear that these katanas are still just as important today. They were never meant for violence, but instead, they were worn for protection. Even now, many hang them in their homes as charms for safety and good luck.

For many years, katanas have been famous for their craftsmanship, history, and beauty. If you want to see how these fantastic swords are made, Hirata Tantoujou (Hirata Blacksmith Workshop) in Ome City, Tokyo, offers a unique chance to experience traditional katana-making.

Meet the Experts Behind the Blades

Hirata Tantoujou is led by master swordsmith Mr. Yuhei Hirata, who trained under a famous Bizen Osafune swordsmith for over 13 years before establishing his forge.

Alongside him is Mrs. Nodoka Hirata, the world's only female Mura-shita (a crucial role in traditional steelmaking). Together, they preserve and refine the ancient craft of sword-forging.

Although each of them has their area of expertise, they check in with each other and offer advice throughout every step of the process. It’s humbling and inspiring to see them working harmoniously together.

What You Can Experience

Mr. and Mrs. Hirata will not only teach you how to make a sword or knife from scratch, but they will also teach you the fascinating philosophy behind Japanese swordsmanship. For instance, sword making is different every time, as the conditions of the fire change daily. Observing and listening to how the fire and metal react is essential.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, a martial arts fan, or simply curious about Japanese craftsmanship, Hirata Tantoujou offers immersive experiences that bring you closer to this incredible tradition.

Forge Your Own Blade (Hands-on Experience)

Feel the sparks of the fire and steel as you participate in making a small blade. Under expert guidance, you will shape, hammer, and refine steel into a real piece of Japanese craftsmanship.

Making swords and knives requires different skills, and it is rare for an artisan to be able to do both. Luckily, the Hiratas are experts in both and can offer courses on creating a small Japanese knife or a full-length katana.

Swordsmithing Demonstrations

The Hiratas have built and designed the forge, and you can observe the master swordsmith forging, folding, and quenching the steel right before you. This experience offers insight into creating a katana's delicate and precise craftsmanship.

Observe the Tamahagane & Tatara Steelmaking

Discover how traditional tamahagane steel (used to make katanas) is made using an ancient smelting method. This rare experience takes you deep into the heart of Japanese metalworking.

Forge Tour & Cultural Insight

Take a guided tour of the workshop, where you'll see the tools, techniques, and passion that goes into each blade.

Even though sword making takes at least 5 years to master, Mr. Yuhei Hirata dedicated 13 years to learning the craft. Talking with him about the history of katana-making and its cultural significance is fascinating and eye-opening.

Comment from the reporter!

Just outside the forge, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Mount Kumotori, a mountain known today as the birthplace of the characters Nezuko and her brother Tanjiro from the popular manga Demon Slayer.
The forge is just a couple of minutes’ walk from the train station, so I believe the Hirata Tantoujou is the most accessible place to try your hand at katana-making in Tokyo.
